The Aero Club of Southern California in the past has assisted in promoting many aviation related shorts and documentaries including “Flying the Feathered Edge” the Bob Hoover Project, the Lafayette Escadrille documentary, as well as other notables. Currently, an Aero Club of Southern California member is working to share the story of Charlie Taylor, “The Mechanician.” Charlie worked with the Wright brothers in their bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio and helped them to design and build the first airplane. There were over 400 Club members and guests at this event, including many government guests. Fran Bera’s fascination with flight began when she took an airplane-themed carnival ride as a young girl in Michigan in the 1930s. As a teenager she hitchhiked more than 30 miles to an airfield, where she worked odd jobs and saved for flight lessons. Aero Club of Southern California to Present Eight Scholarships

The Aero Club of Southern California will hold its annual scholarship dinner at the Proud Bird restaurant at LAX on Saturday, September 23, according to Club President John Stammreich. The keynote speaker will be Kevin Chilton, a retired NASA astronaut and four-star U.S. Air Force General. Three $2,500 grants will go to high school students planning a career in aviation or aerospace. The Karen Johnson Solo Scholarship The Ninety-Nines (99s) will award a $3,000 Karen Johnson Solo Scholarship to provide a young woman (age 16-20 at any time during 2017 calendar year) who wants to learn to fly with financial support for flight training through first solo and beyond.
