The NAA Bruce Whitman Trophy

The National Aeronautic Association established the Bruce Whitman Trophy in 2019 in honor of the late aerospace executive and philanthropist. For over 15 years, Whitman served as CEO of FlightSafety International, enhancing aviation safety worldwide. His dedication to the aerospace industry was matched only by his selflessness in using his time and talents to benefit his country. Whitman worked tirelessly to advance the Medal of Honor legacy and support the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation’s objectives, programs, and activities. In addition to his work with the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, Whitman served on the boards of more than a dozen organizations, including the Civil Air Patrol, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the Corporate Angel Network, the National World War II Museum, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, and the National Aeronautic Association.

The first award was posthumously presented to Bruce Whitman in 2019 in recognition of his significant contributions to the aerospace industry over the past 60 years and his dedication to educating millions about our military’s legacy.

Criteria:

The Whitman Trophy recognizes a living U.S. citizen for their significant professional achievement in aerospace and for their dedicated efforts to preserve and promote military heritage by leveraging institutions to educate the public, especially students, about the profound sacrifices and legacy of U.S. military service.

Selection:

A deserving nominee will be put forth annually by the Chair of the NAA Board to the Executive Committee for confirmation by majority vote.  

Presentation:

  • Nominees must be either U.S. citizens or U.S. organizations.
  • The Whitman Trophy is presented at an appropriate ceremony as determined by the President of the National Aeronautic Association.
  • The awardee will be notified within three business days of selection. The NAA will provide ample travel time, and if the awardee chooses not to attend or cannot attend the awards ceremony, the NAA may ship the award. Shipping and handling fees will apply.
  • The NAA reserves the right not to present an award if the Selection Committee determines that no candidate meets the intent of the award or the award criteria.
  • NAA awards, trophies, and recognitions are non-transferable. They cannot be revoked, except by the NAA Board.
