2020 has been quite the year for the International Aerobatic Club (IAC). The two main annual events we are involved with were cancelled, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the EAA’s AirVenture this year, the IAC was planning on celebrating its 50th Anniversary with special displays and archival photos telling our story. We were also planning on a number of forums and presentations that focused on aerobatics, not to mention the sale of new 50th anniversary merchandise in our IAC pavilion on the EAA grounds. USPA Board Chooses Albert Berchtold to Succeed Longtime Executive Director Ed Scott

After an eight-month search process, the USPA Board of Directors selected Albert Berchtold, D-27832, as USPA’s next executive director. He will officially take the job on January 1, 2021. Berchtold is currently a marketing manager at Performance Designs, a parachute manufacturer in DeLand, Florida, where he has worked for 14 years. With more than 5,500 jumps, Berchtold is an active skydiver and international competitor who is a member of the current U.S. Canopy Piloting Team that is headed to the next world championships. USPA Executive Director, Ed Scott to Retire

U.S. Parachute Association Executive Director Ed Scott will be retiring from USPA at the end of 2020, after 13 years in the position and 24 years with the association. Previously with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and the National Association of State Aviation Officials, Scott joined USPA in 1996 as Director of Government Relations before being selected as USPA’s ninth Executive Director in 2007. Over the past 13 years USPA has grown from 30,000 members to 41,000 members while skydiving safety has improved dramatically. Academy of Model Aeronautics Members Claim Guinness World Record

Guinness World Records recently approved the highest altitude remote-controlled (RC) model aircraft flight of 10,607 m (34,800 ft). The record was achieved by Paul Kaup, Jake Minker, Nick Ross, Eric Gordon, Rachel Stark, and Dani Deckert at Spaceport America in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico on October 13, 2019. The team was a part of StratoJourney, a STEM project for students in 6th through 12th grade.

U.S. Skydiver Wins World Championships! U.S. Parachute Team member Nicholas Batsch has once again earned the title of World Champion of Canopy Piloting after beating out 65 other competitors from around the globe at the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale Canopy Piloting World Championships held in Wroclaw, Poland, in July. Batsch repeated his world champion title, winning the overall gold medal, as well as silver in the speed event and bronze in the distance event. Turkey Named as the 2020 Host Country for the FAI World Air Games

Turkey will be the official host country for the FAI World Air Games 2020, according to a contract signed on February 14, 2018 by Kursat Atilgan, President of the Turkish FAI Member Türk Hava Kurumu (THK), and Frits Brink, President of the FAI, in Lausanne, Switzerland. Scheduled for September 2020, the Games will take place in some of the most iconic locations in Turkey, with the event split between Ankara, Antalya, Eskisehir, Efes/Selcuk, Ölüdeniz/Fethiye and Pammukale/Honaz.
