Earlier this week, NAA announced that General J.R. “Jack” Dailey, USMC (Ret.) and Former Director of the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum, was selected as the recipient of the 2020 Bruce Whitman Trophy. The Whitman Trophy was established by the Board of Directors of NAA in 2019 to honor the late aerospace executive and philanthropist. Whitman was posthumously named as the first recipient of the trophy the same year. The trophy is awarded to “… outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to aviation or aerospace in the United States, and who by working with museums and other institutions have promoted an appreciation by students and the broader public of the sacrifices and legacy of members of the military service.” “I can’t think of anyone who embodies the spirt of the Bruce Whitman Trophy more than Jack,” said NAA Chairman Jim Albaugh. “What makes it especially meaningful, is that while both Jack and Bruce were dedicated to aerospace and its heritage, they were also very close friends.” NAA will present the Bruce Whitman Trophy to General Dailey on a date to be announced.
The Aero Club of Northern California is hosting a free webinar on Thursday, June 18th featuring guest speaker John Aitken, Director of Aviation for San Jose International Airport (SJC). Aitken has served at SJC for over 27 years, and in his current role of Director, he is at the forefront of changes in aviation due to the COVID-19 response. It’s not too late to register – sign up today!
Lastly, NAA would like to congratulate David Joyce, Vice Chair of GE and President & CEO of GE Aviation, who announced his retirement from the company on June 15th after 40 years of service. It was also announced that John Slattery, Embraer’s President & CEO of Commercial Aviation, has been named President & CEO elect of GE Aviation, effective July 13th.
