Awards & Trophies
For almost the entire history of powered flight, NAA has been the caretaker of many of the nation's and the world's most prestigious aviation awards. Part of NAA's mission is identifying and recognizing those who have contributed to the "art, sport and science of aviation and space flight."
NAA's awards program recognizes outstanding achievements across the entire spectrum of aviation from air sports such as Hot Air Ballooning to the most advanced technological achievements in the industry such as the International Space Station. The list of NAA award recipients represents a Who's Who of aviation and space - the best, the brightest, the most innovative.
Anyone can nominate a worthy candidate for our awards; just check the nominations guidelines listed for each award.
Air Sports & FAI
There are many different disciplines of flying that are represented by a variety of Air Sport Organizations (ASOs), which are the heart and soul of aviation in America. Nearly half a million people belong to ASOs in the United States, representing aerobatics, aeromodeling, ballooning, gliding, helicopters, ultralights and parachuting.
Part of NAA's mission is to encourage the sport of aviation. NAA recognizes the ASOs as the official governing bodies for their respective air sports, each of which belongs to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) through their affiliation with NAA. The FAI is the world air sports federation which oversees all air sport activity throughout the world, setting up world championship competitions and keeping world records in all disciplines. NAA is a founding member of FAI.
Ever since the Wright Brothers first lifted off in Kitty Hawk more than 100 years ago, pilots have tried to fly higher, faster and farther than their predecessors. Since 1905, NAA has been encouraging pilots to accomplish those feats.
The Contest & Records Department of NAA oversees and certifies aviation records in the United States, serving exclusively as the national authority for all aviation record-setting activity. The database of current national a world records is posted in this section.
